About the artist:

Hi, my name is Reni LeBard and I have an Etsy shop called Knit Girl in Idaho. I have been married for 23 years and my husband and I have two teenage boys, ages 17 and 13. Our family moved to Idaho from Seattle five years ago this month, but having been born and raised in Alaska, Idaho is much more like home to me than Washington ever was!

I learned how to knit when I was a little girl, but didn't pick up the craft again until my kids were in school. I started out knitting only garter stitch scarves and other novice patterns, however, it didn't take long until I was bored with those projects. Now my all-time favorite project to knit is socks. They are portable, challenging and you can make a pair of socks with one skein of yarn. There are so many free patterns available that I don't think I can ever tire of knitting socks.

In October 2009, I started Knit Girl in Idaho out of necessity because I wanted to make and use my own stitch markers when knitting my socks. Stitch markers are used while knitting socks, mittens, hats, shawls or other patterns that require you to keep track of your stitches. Some people use scraps of yarn, but stitch markers are a fun way to adorn any knitting project, but also make great gifts! I belong to an online knitting and crochet social network, called Ravelry and the gals on Ravelry saw my stitch markers and started requesting sets for themselves! After a few short weeks, these same women encouraged me to open an Etsy shop, which I did. It wasn't long before my non-knitting family and friends wanted to support me, which is why I also sell wine charms in my shop!

Knit Girl in Idaho is where you can find unique, handmade stitch markers and wine charms! My one-of-a-kind, keepsake items are created using virtually any picture, personal design, personal logo, and even some short sayings. My wine charms make the perfect keepsake wedding favor or a treasured gift for the bride and groom, as well as an inexpensive hostess gift for bbq's, showers and cocktail parties! All of my items are sold in sets of 2, 4 or 6, plus I have wholesale & bulk pricing available.

Why are you a member of IIW?

One of my first goals when I opened my Etsy shop was to connect with other creative people in my community, so I joined the Idaho Indie Works team! It's wonderful to have a group of experienced, local Etsy sellers to chat with and glean invaluable insight from, but I'm more interested in cultivating new friendships with the men and women who are members of the IIW team.

Etsy Craft Party 2010

This past Friday Etsy turned 5 years old. To celebrate, they threw a world wide craft party. Groups all over the world participated in crafting together and promoting handmade. Our group in Boise made it on to Etsy's Top 50 list for the most people who signed up to come so Etsy sent us a very nice package of goodies for the party.

Here are some of the highlights from Friday's crafting goodness.

As you can see, we had a good turn out and everyone had fun visiting the different craft stations like ...

Artist Bio: I am a native Idahoan who's work requires me to travel to all kinds of interesting locations. One day (4 years ago) I wandered into a bead shop on the banks of a gorgeous canal in Pittsford, New York and that was the beginning of my beading/jewelry obsession. From that day on I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to hunt for unique items in all the charming cities I visit. I just think it's so cool to take a piece of stone or glass and incorporate it into something that expresses one's personality. And I'm easily distracted by shiny objects!

Why I'm a member of IIW: I stumbled across the Idaho Indie Works team at the Hyde Park Street Fair last year and was absolutely amazed to discover that such a talented group of local artists, selling their goods on Etsy, even existed. I was even more honored that they would allow me to join their amazing team. I am new to selling at craft shows and this group is so supportive and full of creative ideas. I'm in awe every time I am around these folks.

About the piece: Abalone Sterling Silver wrapped ring size 7. A green abalone stone is surrounded by purple and green Swarovski crystals wrapped with Sterling Silver wire.

The Prize: A lovely pair of handmade earrings.

Artist Bio: Aimee was born in New York and raised on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. With a love for the ocean and the wild life that inhabits the coast she decided to name her business after her nickname for sea gulls, which is Beach Chickens. Aimee has been creative and crafty as far back as she can remember. Living on the beach and taking daily walks to collect “treasure”, she started making sculptures out of the random objects that she found and sold them at an art gallery in Beaufort, NC. Moving to Boise, Idaho changed where Aimee would find her “treasure”, she now looks to thrift stores and recycling bins. In every item created she includes re-used or recycled materials. Her most popular items are vintage book journals and upcycled jewelry.

Why I am a member of IIW - I became a member of Idaho Indie Works to meet other artists in the Boise area. When I joined I was new to doing craft shows and they helped me learn about the scene. Every time I am with the team they amaze me, they are just a great group of talented people.

This past First Thursday was the Grand Opening of the Idaho Indie Works Boutique. Many Idaho Indie Works team members came to join us for the opening. Idaho Indie Works Grand Opening

The Idaho Indie Works Boutique, at 6th and Main in Boise, is getting ready for a big Grand Opening celebration this upcoming First Thursday on April 1st. There will be music by Brock Bartel and Sam Baldazo, food catered by Open Table Catering Company, and wine tasting by Buzz Cafe. There will also be a raffle, and, of course, lots of wonderfully talented artisans displaying their wares. Festivities start at 5 pm so come down and have a look around.

The Idaho Indie Works Boutique

With much anticipation, the Idaho Indie Works Boutique finally opened. Not only did we have a huge turnout of artisans selling their items last night, but we saw a huge crowd wandering in and out of the shop and throughout the whole building. It was a very exciting evening.

P's to Success

I don’t know if you all subscribe to the Etsy E-mails, but last Thursday I received one that had a link to a Forum thread called “How the Four P’s Helped Me Hit 100 Sales”. Here is what the author, NaturalAmber, had to say:

I am so excited, I had this feeling after I left on Friday that on Monday I would hit my first major milestone, I just hit 100 sales and I have the four P's to thank for that.

Persistance: Even when sales were slow and I felt like giving up I kept pushing forward. determination is what kept me from closing shop on ETSY. I had this false expectation that just setting up shop would mean sales, now I have learned its determination, promoting, and marketing that gets customers to your shop.

Patience: I had to learn that patience was key to success. It's so easy to get caught up and compare yourself to many other shops on here. Once I learned to be patient I started to not get so down on lack of sales or views during slower times.

Perfection: There is no such thing and ytour shop always has room for improvement. These weekend I will be working on my new spring line, and the pictures are better then the ones I have in the shop... but I always know that you can improve on that. Never fear setting up construction in your shop.

Projects: Keep on crafting. Thats what brought you here. You'll find yourself more happy that your continuing your art, and you'll find customers love the freshness of new items in your shop!

Thank you guys for all your support! This has been a fun and exciting ride to my first 100.

PRIDE: Have pride in what you do. If you aren’t doing the best that you can do, then don’t do it. Anybody can be mediocre, but very few people can rise above that. Be proud of yourself and what you accomplish.

PLEASURE: I think for most of us, we create for the pure pleasure of it. It’s not that we expect to get rich and famous from what we do. We do it to feel the highs of making something new, of trying new techniques and mediums, to push the limits of our creative mind. If what you do doesn’t make you happy, then it’s time to rethink your motivations.

That’s how the 6 P’s can help you achieve, 25, 100, 500 sales. The sky’s the limit.

The Dream is Alive

Just in case there is anyone who hasn't heard yet, Idaho Indie Works is opening up a boutique. That's right! This great group of talent is going to be selling its wares to the public in its own store. For many people, having their own store is nothing more than a dream, but for the lucky few, it can be a reality. I, personally, am so excited to have a shop and am happy to be sharing it with an awesome group of people.

The boutique will be located in a corner of the Pioneer Tent Building (6th & Main, downtown Boise), a place where we have been making a name for ourselves through First Thursday. It seemed the most natural place for the shop to be and good fortune that we were able to get in there.

As we speak, people are down there painting and getting the store ready. It is set to open March 1st, with a grand opening for April's First Thursday. Stay tuned for more details.

Some people dream of success... while others wake up and work hard at it.

Re-Use Market

In September, Aimee (Beach Chicken) and I went to the Re-Use Market in Nampa. When we got there, there was a guy with a big camera taking footage. I didn't think too much of it until Aimee told me that it had made it on to the news. Click here to see the clip that was shown on KIVI Channel 6. If you look closely, you will also catch a glimpse of Aimee and my daughter perusing through some stuff.

The Re-Use Market is located in the back of the White Pine Boutique at 115 13th Ave S in downtown Nampa. The market is open only a few hours each month and there are all kinds of fabric swatches, ceramic tiles and paper goods to be re-invented into new items. Check out their website to find out more. (Scroll down to see a picture of Millie digging for treasures.) And don't forget to browse around the boutique too. Several IIW team members have items for sale there. Look for items from Aimee (Beach Chicken), Trish (Bella Grano) and Mary (Mary Makes Art).

Hyde Park Fair 2009

This past weekend was Hyde Park's 30th annual fair. Idaho Indie Works set up a giant booth this year featuring many talented artists. It was three days of busy selling and hanging out together. It was a lot of fun.

We couldn't have pulled this off if it wasn't for everyone working together. There was a real team spirit this weekend. I think we have the best Etsy Street team out there.

It's one thing to sell your work anonymously on Etsy from the comfort of your own home, but it's a totally different experience to set up a table with your items for the public to see. Not only can it be a little intimidating to have to talk to strangers face to face, but then trying to figure out how to set up your items can be a challenge. I recently decided to revamp my whole set up when it finally dawned on me that just having my items out wasn't enough to sell them. I had no idea what to do so I started surfing the net to find inspiration. I wanted to see what other people were doing. Some of what I saw was brilliant and some, not so much. But that was good. I got to see what NOT to do. Here are a few sites that really helped me out:

Jewelry Display Ideas

It's OK to get out there and give it a try. If you find that your display isn't working, change it. Sometimes it just takes a little while to get the feel of it. And what you do for an indoor event might not work for an outdoor one. I'm sure that almost everyone doing craft shows and markets today will say that they have all changed there set up at least once. And if you need help, please feel free to ask your fellow IIW team members for help. I have and I'm so grateful for the advice. We all want everyone to succeed because if you don't, then we don't.

Hill's and AIDA

Hill's Gift's (on the corner of Broadway and Beacon) has teamed up with local artists and the Animals in Distress Association to raise money for our local bird and mammal rehab centre. The sale started yesterday and will run through next Saturday, May 9th. This week is Be Kind to Animals Week so the timing couldn't be better. Some of the artist's displaying their items are from our own Idaho Indie Works. There is a wide variety of items from jewelry and handmade soap to dog coats. The owners of Hill's have kindly let artists occupy a large area of the store right next to the post office. Five percent of artists' sales will go directly to Animals in Distress with Hill's Gifts making a matching donation.

So come on down and show your support, even if it's just to say hi to the artist volunteers who are running the area and check out this really fun and unique gift shop.

IIW: What item are you donating and why?

StarMotif: I am donating the "Gold Swirl" bracelet. I want SOMEONE to have this bracelet. It is one of my favorite bracelets that I have ever made but I can't seem to sell it even though every show I have it at everyone and I mean EVERYONE picks it up and looks at it. Now one of the wonerful people that enter this giveaway can have it.

IIW: What is the inspiration behind the piece?

StarMotif: I love swirls and swiggles. They are so whimsical and fun. I really love swarovski crystals and dangles and had to incorporate them in this bracelet.

IIW: What do you like about IIW and/or why have you joined IIW?

StarMotif: It has been very helpful to me to be in IIW team because we make selling opportunities for each other and keep each other informed about different festivals and fairs we can participate in. Plus it is nice to know that we are helping support our communities.

Hill's Craft Show

Yesterday several crafters and I set up our wares at Hill's Valu-Rite for a fun day of selling and camaraderie. This was the first Idaho Indie Works event that I have participated in so I got a chance to meet the people behind the shops. I had heard of most of them through the Google group, but putting a face to a name was a huge bonus for me. And let me say, what a great group of people they are. Not only are they fun to be around, but they are all extremely talented. Just being around all those creative people kept me buzzing all day. We shared stories and brainstormed on new ideas. It was so much fun and I can't wait to get together with everyone again.

Finding Inspiration

Have you ever thought about the things that inspire you and where they come from? There are the obvious places like the mass media. I like to see what the new trends are out there and fashion magazines and soap operas will often give me ideas to work with. Sometimes just having that bit of quiet time in the shower will get my mind thinking about things.

But then there are the simplest of things that get my head spinning with new inspiration. I read a book this fall and the author mentioned one piece of jewelry that has now wanting me to create a whole new line based around that one item. And yesterday I went to Joann’s Fabrics to see if there was anything left worth getting before the store closed for good. I was looking through the small selection of leftover ribbon and trim when I saw one spool in particular that caught my eye. There was a rubber band around the ribbon holding it to the spool and the way the ribbon was all crinkled gave me a great idea for a new project. If it hadn’t been for that rubber band, I would have passed the ribbon by without thinking twice.

I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, thinking about the state of the economy, the new president, job security. It’s a very scary thing when politicians and economists start throwing the “R” word around. Suddenly everyone panics and purse pockets are locked tight. Someone was quoted in the Idaho Statesman not long ago that 2009 was going to be a “bloodbath” of dying retail shops. What a lot of people don’t realize that it’s not just the US who is suffering – this recession has far reaching effects, touching the entire globe. In speaking with my family and friends all over the world, I can see how it is affecting them as well. The world is getting smaller and countries are no longer isolated. What hurts us, hurts us all.

People and countries alike are all looking to newly elected President Barak Obama to help fix our woes. But should we really be putting so much faith into one man? Is he going to be able to turn things around now before things get any worse? Personally, I can’t see it happening. He is just a human, after all, with no super hero powers to speak of. Should we put so much faith into an ordinary man with an extraordinary title?

That got me thinking some more. I wanted to know if there was something that I could do. But what could that be? Should I only be interested in looking out for myself and my family? Should I act like there is no recession and keep on doing what I’m doing? Then I thought that maybe I could use my shopping decisions to make a difference. Maybe if I tried harder to buy more handmade items, especially if they are local, I could not only fulfill my needs, but also help out other people in the community in which I live and the handcrafting community in general. It helps put money into the pockets of people like you and me; people like stay-at-home moms and those with natural creative gifts. That makes much more sense than giving it to large, cookie-cutter department stores with their cookie-cutter wares. Not that they don’t have their place in our community, but there is so much more out there.

I know that I’m only one person, but I think that I still can make a small difference, even if it’s only for me and a handful of others. I can help to influence my children to make wise choices. And maybe those that I have touched will go on to touch others, to spread the word on buying local and handmade. More and more people are starting to turn to handmade to supplement their incomes. They are looking to the rest of us for support. When the world crumbles down around us, we only have each other.

Its 3 ½”x5”x 1” deep cut from blue and green sheet glass with frit sprinkled on. Put to a full fuse (1450 degrees F. then slumped in a mold I made at 1200 degrees F.) Could probably be used for candles, potpourri, etc.

What's the inspriation behind this sock? "I loved the pattern for the stocking and it's a family tradition at our house that Santa leaves a family gift, like a small game and some candy that we can share in addition to individual stockins so I made another."

How about that chewie? "The chewie blocks come from an idea based on a gift my mom made for my oldest son. He received a big stuffed block to chew on but he only really liked the ribbon loop she added to hook it to his carseat. I thought I would start making blocks with lots of loops and the idea has really worked. "

Nampa Farmer's Market

The first time I met with the farmer's market board - they had one question for me: "Why is your name Revive?" - I answered, "Well, I think it's time for our community to be revived, and revitalized - it's time to make something old (Nampa) into something new." That response was mostly met with some quizzical looks and a grunt or two. This year they were ready for something new - so, I think that means things ARE changing.

What's that "something new"? It's our Idaho Indie Works booth. It incorporates a new artist or two each week, a variety of products from soap to jewelry to quilts. What's the common bond? Etsy.com - we all sell our items online. And now with our newly formed alliance of members, we're able to make connections and organize our small businesses into a large family of crafters - able to create unique face-to-face selling opportunities that promote us all.

When we artists spend countless hours creating our pieces, we understand the value of "handmade" and "local". Now, it's time to spread the word. Start a revolution in your community of friends, family and customers. Is there a better place to spend your hard-earned cash, than your local farmer's market?

Nampa Farmer's Market is very low-key, laid-back and down-home market. With everything from fresh baked bread to handmade doll clothes. Each week there is a local chef, using local ingredients, creating a dish for you to sample. There are sock monkeys and homemade jams, local honey and baby slings, pottery and cloth diapers. It is a small market, but very diverse and Idaho Indie Works brings even more variety to the table.

Here is a schedule of featured artists through the end of August. Invite your friends, family and direct potential customers to come see us at the market. Each artist will be promoting the Idaho Indie Works group, and Etsy has promised us promotional materials so we can introduce more and more customers to the beauty of etsy.com. It's going to be a great summer and a great opportunity to see something different every week at the market. See you there!

Destash Swap at Puffy Mondaes

We held our first de-stash swap hosted by Keren of Puffy Mondaes in Nampa. It was so much fun seeing everyone show up with bags of their creative "left-overs". The table was full in no time.

For those of you who didn't show up, well, here are a few things you missed out on:
-tons of wooden beads from a beaded curtain
-scrap book paper, LOTS of scrap book paper, very cool prints & colors!
-corks
-beads, assorted shapes, sizes & colors
-fabric, there was vintage fabric, quilting fabric, upholstery samples, TONS of fabric!
-polymer clay in assorted colors
-sewing machine parts (I think that's what they were)
-felt shapes
-soap molds
-and there was too much more for me to remember or list!

It was so much fun not only finding new treasures, but meeting some of our newer members too. Thank you to everyone who showed and thank you Keren for opening your space to us!

Cathy Scarlett interviewed by Miss Courageous

MC: How long have you been painting? your history, education, etc...
CS: I've been painting and drawing for about 20 years. I don't remember exactly, seems like I've always painted. I started at the age of seven with pastels, I assume the painting began in Jr. High. I took some art classes at BSU but it didn't go anywhere. I tend to leave murals behind...my parent's basement, the sister-in-law's attic...

MC: are you a full-time artist? Other job? How do you balance family etc...
CS: I recently got laid off from my *awesome* tech support job, the severance package and unemployment insurance has allowed me a lot more time to work on my art. It gave me time to start my Etsy page and dedicate more time to paint, although most of it occurs on weekends and nap time. I have a 20 month old son and 13 year old daughter. My husband is super supportive and will take both our kids (or at least the boy) out for the day and give me time to work.

MC:What other forms of art do you do?
CS: Drawing mostly, which turn into paintings. I've started creating with screen printing and linocut. I used to make polymer clay beads. I've played wood burning, casting resin, wire jewelry, but keep coming back to painting.

MC: How did you hear about etsy?
CS: I found Etsy on a design blog.

MC: Favorite etsy shop or recent purchase?
CS: I have all kinds of favorite shops on Etsy, but if I have to narrow it down... louisartworld is pretty cool. I bought a couple of his ACEOs that I love. I recently purchased "Nice Smelling Beaver Stuffie" from prettygreeneye, check her out, she's hilarious.

MC: What have you learned from being on etsy?
CS: Patience.

MC: What would you like to get out of being on the street team?
CS: I joined the street team to meet other local artists and to get my name out there since I'm no marketing genius. We have some cool-ass artists here in Idaho and I'm diggin' it.

MC: Can you describe your workspace?
CS: I have taken over the dinning room, the storage closet under the stairs, half the master bedroom and usually half the kitchen. I like to spread out.

MC: Where do you get your inspiration?
CS: Where do I get my inspiration? I don't know. Nature is always good. Usually I just start drawing and see what happens. Oh, textured walls, ceilings, and floors are great inspiration, just stare long enough and you'll start seeing things.

MC: What goals or plans do you have for the future?
CS: I hope to sell enough to make some sort of business out of it, even if it only covers the cost of materials. I recently sold a logo design to a local business, so that's something.

MC: Where else can we find your work? (websites, blogs, brick & mortar?)
CS: I haven't another website other than Etsy, although I keep thinking about it. I've been featured on the design blog SimplyGrove.blogspot.com. I'll be at the Nampa Farmer's Market a couple times this summer and maybe the Music in the Mountains in August.

MC: Any plans for new products (t-shirts, cards, etc
CS: I've started adding some prints of my paintings to my site. I've also added some linocut greeting cards. I'm half thinking about doing a couple screen printed t's. I made a cool starry eyed skull t shirt the other day. I think my son could rock it, babies and skulls go together. I have a lot of drawings that would lend themselves to greeting cards as well.
